"Dari Sabang sampai ke Marauke, mereka orang-orang yang profesional dan kenyang akan pengalaman," tuturnya.

PhD Positions, UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Netherlands

UNESCO-IHE, The Netherlands, and the following partners: Makerere University in Uganda, KNUST in Ghana, AIT in Thailand, 2iE in Burkina Faso, ITB in Indonesia, UCT in South Africa, UFMG in Brasil, and Univalle in Colombia were awarded a US$8 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The grant will be used to finance a 5-year capacity building and research project to stimulate local innovation on sanitation for the urban poor in sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia.

The project has two principal objectives: (i) to stimulate local innovation on sanitation for the urban poor through research, and (ii) to strengthen the sanitation sector in developing countries through education and training.

The direct beneficiaries of the project are individuals from developing countries and academic institutions involved in the project that are instrumental in stimulating local innovation on sanitation for the ultimate recipients of the project outcomes – the urban poor in sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia.

The project will: (i) increase the number of adequately trained sanitation professionals in developing countries, (ii) provide research possibilities, education and training for the new generation of ‘all-round’ sanitary engineers, (iii) make (post-graduate) education in sanitary engineering more accessible to individuals from developing countries, and (iv) further strengthen the pro-poor sanitation component at the academic institutions involved.

The 5-year project (2011-2016) will be jointly executed by UNESCO-IHE (principal grantee) and 8 partners from developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia and South America (sub-grantees), supported by several external sub-contracting parties and individuals.

Components
The project contains 7 components: (i) the post-doctoral program; (ii) the doctoral program and PhD scholarships; (iii) masters education and MSc scholarships; (iv) the new online Masters in Sanitary Engineering and scholarships; (v) two new online training courses; (vi) the new Professional Diploma and scholarships; and (vii) online courses and scholarships, and it targets more than 600 direct individual beneficiaries.

Research Themes
The research part of the project is clustered around 5 thematic areas/packages on pro-urban poor sanitation, each to be coordinated by one partner (the Research Package Leader – RPL): (i) smart sanitation provision for slums and informal settlements (Makerere University); (ii) emergency sanitation following natural and anthropological disasters (UNESCO-IHE); (iii) resource-oriented decentralized sanitation (AIT); (iv) low-cost wastewater collection and treatment (2iE); and (v) faecal sludge management (KNUST).

Project Outcomes
Outcomes of the project can be summarized as: (i) the research capacity and facilities of the partner institutions will be enhanced; (ii) an international academic network on pro-poor sanitation will be established; (iii) practical applications of innovation in sanitation for the urban poor will be put in place; (iv) a proposal for the business spin-offs will be developed; (v) human resource capacity will be increased in the sanitation sector; and (vi) there will be increased access of professionals from developing countries to education and training.

To support the research component of the project 20 PhD positions for junior researchers are funded by the project.

PhD position information

• The positions are based at the premises of the 8 project partners.
• The PhD fellow will report to the professor in charge at the host academic institution.
• The PhD position is funded on a fellowship arrangement in accordance with standard practice applied at host institutions;
• Expected starting date is early 2012;
• Duration of the assignment is maximum 4 years;
• The PhD fellow will have high degree of involvement in execution of the research package assigned to the host institution under this project.
• The PhD fellow will be awarded the doctoral degree by the host institution.

Position requirements

• Candidates should be young researchers from developing country, preferably from sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia, however researchers from other developing regions are encouraged to apply;
• Candidates must have a Master degree in a discipline relevant to the research themes, e.g. sanitary engineering, civil engineering, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, biochemistry, biotechnology etc.
• Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest and experience in conducting and managing experimental and interdisciplinary sanitation-related research;
• Applicants with pronounced affinity for laboratory and/or practical research and fieldwork will be preferred;
• The applicant must be proficient in English and have developed communication and writing skills;
• Applicants for the position in Brasil must originate from Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP).

StuNed Scholarship Program 2012 for Indonesian Students

The Stuned Scholarship Program 2012 for master degree or short courses in the Netherlands.

stuNed, Studeren in Nederland, is a scholarship programme focusing on mid-career professionals, as part of the bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands. The scholarship programme aims to contribute to the development of Indonesia through strengthening the human resources of Indonesian organisations. Individual applicants may apply for master degree or short courses in the Netherlands, whilst institutions may apply through the StuNed Group Application.

The StuNED Scholarship Program is part of the bilateral development co-operation between Indonesia and The Netherlands. The program enables professionals belonging to the target group to take a Master’s degree course or a postgraduate course at a university in the Netherlands to further enhance their professional knowledge and skills in areas that are critical for the development of the country. The target group is government officials (central and regional), NGO officials, lecturers-educators and journalists. Employees of private companies working in development related sectors may also apply.

Eligibility Eligible students:

• be an Indonesian national;
• have earned a S1 or Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent at a recognized university in Indonesia; be able to provide evidence of the academic achievements (minimum G.P.A. score 2.75):
• relevant work experience for at least two years;
• have an academic or professional background that is related to the subject of the course;
• be full time available for the entire period of the study program or course and be able to participate in and complete all courses;
• TOEFL ITP 550, IELTS 6) [please note that higher grades are required for admission to a TU/e Master's program];
• be admitted to one of the courses or programs offered by Institutes of Higher Education in the Netherlands for the academic year 2012-2013;
• no age limit, but priority will be given to mid-career professionals.

Netherlands Fellowship Programme in Internet for Journalists, RNTC

To strengthen the capacity of broadcast, print and online journalists and of the organisations they work for to use the Internet for the purposes of research, publication and distribution.

Journalism and the Internet
The Internet is an exciting medium for journalists and media organisations. Journalists can find a wealth of information, previously difficult to obtain, which can help them in their research and in keeping abreast of events and trends. The speed of the internet and its growing ubiquity (thanks also to the rise of mobile phones) means that it is increasingly for journalists the first medium on which their stories appear. On the internet they can present their news stories in new and attractive ways, supported by additional background material, using a variety of media, and stored in dossiers and archives for later retrieval. The rapid evolution of interactive technologies and social media also mean that, more than ever, journalists can engage with their audiences and readers.

As an integrated medium of publication, distribution and communication, in which the traditional, clear-cut divisions between text, graphics, audio and video are blurred, the internet poses a lot of challenges. Journalists, who saw themselves first and foremost as print or broadcast journalists now work as ‘content providers’ in multimedia newsrooms, generating material for a variety of different media platforms.

The principles of interactivity and non-linearity require that information for the internet has to be ordered and presented differently. Its multimedia nature also makes organisational demands. New structures have to be designed to cope with the new ways of production, publication and distribution. New ways of working pose a challenge to established working practices and attitudes. New business models have to be developed and adopted.

Since the Internet is still a relatively young medium, there is plenty of experimentation and innovation going on. The rise of social networks, ‘civilian journalism’ and the success of ‘YouTube’ mean that the Internet has also become an established competitor of mainstream media for the attention of audiences and readers worldwide. These developments are also changing the traditional role of journalists as well as their relationship with their audiences and readers. To be able to face the challenges of the 21st century, it is important that media organisations and the people who work for adapt to the changes taking place and incorporate them in the way they work.

Methodology: learning by doing
The course will be dedicated to enabling the participating journalists to work as Internet journalists/producers. The focus will be on content rather than on technical skills. Attention will be paid to the two central tenets of the Internet: information and communication. Special emphasis will be placed on the three main principles of multimedia environments: the multimedia mix, interactivity and non-linearity. The emphasis will be on learning by doing, focusing on theory and practice. In addition to attending course sessions and workshops, participants will be sent on a number of radio or television location assignments.

The potential and the use of the Internet as a source of information will be explored (the Internet as a research tool), and options for its use as a medium of communication, publication and distribution analysed and applied to the specific situation of the participants. The possibilities and advantages of the Internet – as well as some of its drawbacks – for journalists and the organisations they work for will be highlighted.

The participants will be from different professional media (radio, television, print, online). The aim of the course is to transcend these boundaries and merge the disciplines in search of the ideal of a multimedia journalist. Participants will acquire knowledge of the essentials of web-design (structure, interaction and lay-out) and skills for the development of websites and for production for the Internet, such as writing non-linear, interactive pieces, making graphics and producing audio and video. Participants will analyse existing examples of websites attached to newspapers, magazines and broadcasting organisations.

All RNTC’s courses are targeted at media professionals from developing countries and countries in transition. If you are working for a media organisation, or an organisation working with the media, you can apply. For all our courses, the following requirements apply:

1. you have a minimum of three years working experience in the media

3. you have followed secondary education, and professional education or training in media
4. you are used to work with computers
5. your speaking and writing skills in English (the course language) are sufficient

Netherlands Fellowship Programme
The Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP) is a demand-driven fellowship programme designed to foster capacity building within organisations by providing training and education to their mid-career staff members. NFP-fellowships cover your travel costs, accommodation and course fee. NFP is funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs from the budget for development co-operation, and run by NUFFIC, the Netherlands Organisation for International Cooperation in Higher Education. Half of the available fellowships are awarded to women, and simultaneously, half of the available budget is spent on candidates from sub-Saharan Africa. Apart from this, priority is given to candidates from deprived groups and/or from marginalized regions.

Who is eligible for NFP?
